Kenya, Merille River-Marsabit (A2) Road Construction Project.

The 122 km Merille River – Marsabit Highway is a vital part of Africa’s strategic transport corridor, which extends from the Port of Alexandria in North Africa to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. The project is located approximately 500 km northeast of Nairobi and involved upgrading an existing earth road between Merille River and Marsabit to a fully paved asphalt road.

Construction Methodology

The carriageway was constructed as a single-lane dual traffic road with a 7-meter platform and 2-meter shoulders on each side, totalling 11 meters in width. Major works included earthworks, cement-stabilized subbase and base layers, asphalt wearing course, double surface dressing, composite bridges and viaducts, box and pipe culverts, horizontal and vertical signage, guardrails, and associated structures.

Funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the project was successfully completed in 2016 after a three-year construction period involving over 1,000 personnel. The road was designed to enhance trade, promote economic activity and employment, and reduce logistics costs across the region.
